The Sayeret Maglan or unit 212 is the special forces long range missiles warfare unit of the Israeli Defence Force. The unit also provides ground laser designation for the Israeli Air Force.
The unit was formed in 1984 after experiences during Operation Peace for Galilee in 1982. During this operation elements of the Infantry Corps made contact with Syrian armoured vehicles. These experiences made the Israeli Defence Force realise that it lacked the presence of an independent rapid deployment anti tank unit.
The Sayeret Maglan is under direct command of the General Staff of the Israeli Defence Force. The unit has a firm connection with the T'zanhanim brigade. This is due to the crucial fact that both the operators as the equipment need to be fully airborne. Recruits wishing to enlist take part of the Sayeret T'zanhanim Gibush. After the first seven months of training, these operators are reassigned to Sayeret Maglan. From here they start a year of specialised training.
